A Community working together: A real KYSS of life

Posted : 13th September 2011

How many people do you know whose lives have been destroyed by drink, drugs and/or mental health problems?. Are you impacted yourself? Is your child, brother, sister or close relative one of these people?

The effects of drink, drugs and mental health issues are to be seen in every parish and in many families all over the country. A recent study reported that 1in 5 teenagers had suicidal ideas.
While some communities have difficulties dealing with this issue, a unique project was set up in the Carrigdhoun area of South East Cork, including Kinsale and its hinterland.  A voluntary group, KYSS, Kinsale Youth Support Services was set up in 2010 to proactively  address this whole topic.

The group formed, included community representatives, parents, young people and professional help from G.P’s, Gardaí, H.S E and Schools, all of whom have experience in dealing with these issues. They came together and as a result decided to meet the needs through a three prong approach.

These are

  1. An information booklet to target both young people and adults in the community
  2. A user friendly website www.kyss.ie with an interactive Facebook page
  3. An Awareness Day which will be held at Acton's Hotel, in Kinsale on the 11th of October 2011, which will coincide with World Mental Health Day..

This awareness day will be open from 3.00pm to 9.00pm and will have

  • Experts in the fields of mental health and related health areas

  • Educational seminars for young and old

  • Performance artists reflecting the message of the day

  • Body and Soul groups who will help with nutrition and general well being.

The community is for young and old alike, You are an  important part in it.  Come along, be informed, make your community a better place for all. So don’t forget:

Acton's Hotel, in Kinsale on the 11th of October 2011 from 3.00pm to 9.00pm
